Our Wealth, Our Power, Our Future.
Our Wealth, Our Power, Our Future.
A Stokvel is a traditional South African savings scheme in which a group of individuals agree to contribute a fixed amount of money to a common pool regularly, weekly, fortnightly, or monthly. These funds are then distributed to members in various ways, depending on the type of Stokvel. This system is a form of a Rotating Savings and Credit Association (ROSCA), prevalent worldwide under different names, such as Chama in East Africa or Hui in China.
Types of Stokvels that exist in South Africa:
Grocery Stokvels' funds are pooled to purchase groceries in bulk, typically at the end of the year in preparation for the holiday season and seasonal traditional ceremonies and funerals.
Savings Clubs members save a fixed amount; the total is distributed at the end of a cycle, usually annually, with each member receiving the same total amount.
Burial Societies provide financial and practical support for funeral expenses.
Investment Clubs' pooled funds are invested to generate returns for members.
Borrowing Stokvels' funds are used to provide loans to members, often with interest.
Multi-function Stokvels combine elements of the above types to serve multiple purposes.
